MagSafe Technology and the Future of Charging

With the iPhone 12, Apple introduced MagSafe charging, a new accessory that works across Apple devices like the Apple Watch and Apple AirPods. The technology is also backward compatible with the iPhone 8 forward. Is it representative of the future of charging for devices?

 What is MagSafe?

MagSafe utilizes magnet technology and was originally created as a safety feature for MacBook changing cords. Created in 2006, the original concept answered the concern, if the power cable for a MacBook were to be tripped over, the cable would disconnect from the laptop without damaging the cable or pulling the MacBook to the ground and causing it damage. Connecting with a magnet allowed for the easy disconnection or attachment to the MacBook instead of needing to find and plug the charger into a port.

Although iPhones starting with the iPhone 8 had the required Qi charging to use for wireless charging, it was the iPhone 12 that began taking advantage of MagSafe benefits. The technology was available earlier for the Apple Watch as it was introduced AirPods in their third generation.

The magnetic attachment doesn’t mean your Apple products will be attracting all of the paper clips of your desk or get stock to other magnets as it only works between the Apple product and the charger.

What is so Special About MagSafe Charging?

“The first thing a MagSafe user will notice is how easy it is to charge their Apple items,” says a representative from AUKEY, a tech leader recognized across the industry for its dynamic accessory design. “Drop the items onto the charger, and you’re done. The magnets will draw to each other and ensure perfect placement for the technology to charge them. There is no struggle trying to find the charging port, especially for those who attach our phones in the dark before bed.”

A single device can charge multiple items at once. There is no need to charge your Apple items separately or have multiple chargers using accessories meant to charge your watch, phone, and earbuds simultaneously, as it can accommodate all three.

You’re needn’t worry about having a space to lay your phone as the magnets easily hold the phone vertically. Those large car phone holders are a thing of the past when a phone could be easily attached and securely held into place. A small vent holder is all that is needed to hold a phone upright in the car. A MagSafe charger attached to your treadmill or exercise bike means your phone is visible and useable while working out.

It’s much faster than wired charging too. The technology charges up to 15W when connected to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, whereas a standard wireless charge delivers 7.5W. Less time charging is always desirable. Estimates from Apple say that 17% of the phone battery can be charged in just 10 minutes.

Your phone is used while working, as it is vertically placed with the correct charger. A simple swipe-up and face identification will unlock your phone for a call or other activity while you work away.

Portable charging is a cinch with Magsafe. A small, MagSafe charger easily connects to your Apple device and charges it quickly. Suppose your watch or AirPod case needs a charge while on the go; you may also charge them. Previous solutions for portable charging have required a cable, so multiple cables would need to be carried if devices used different charging technology.

While recent iPhones are water-resistant to 2 feet deep for no more than 30 minutes, it is still strongly discouraged. An Apple watch is water-resistant up to 50 meters (168 feet) due to the absence of a charging port. Future phones will likely abandon charging ports entirely as a way to increase water resistance.

MagSafe is the Future

The ability to charge devices quickly and charge on a single charging stand makes life much easier than finding cables and attaching them through charging ports. Even though lightning ports are easier to connect, the need for no port at all is preferable.

Safety, ease of use, and productivity gains are fantastic benefits of MagSafe charging, and it is a superior solution and the future of charging phones and devices. It remains to be seen if Apple will license its use to other tech manufacturers, but we truly hope they do.
