Username and server nickname
- When you first register for Discord, you will be asked to create a username. However, you can change your username any time after registration.
- To change your username, click on the gear icon next to your name and profile picture to access the settings menu.
- Under User Settings, go to My Account, click “Edit” and you will be prompted to enter your new username. After entering, you will have to enter your Discord password to confirm the changes.
- Additionally, you can set your nickname specifically for each server. Go to one of your servers and click the down arrow next to the top left’s server name. Select “Change Nickname” to set your custom display name.

Discord avatars
To set up your avatar on Discord, go to “My Account” and click on the circle with your current profile picture.

Discord Integrations
You can link various accounts on websites and services to your Discord account. Each app adds unique connections to your account. For example, linking to your Xbox, Steam, or Battle.net account allows you to display the game you are currently playing whenever someone sees your profile card.
Your account can also be linked to streaming services like Twitch and YouTube, so people in your will know when you stream live on Twitch, or you can link your Spotify account to show what you’re currently playing.
To set up integrations, go to User Settings> Connections and click on the icon for the app you want to connect to. You can customize each integration specifically.
Custom number tag
Each Discord username has a four-digit number at the end, which allows multiple people to keep the same username. If you are on a free account, unfortunately, there’s no way to customize it. You have to upgrade to premium for that.
However, if you are in Discord Nitro, go to the “My Account” tab and click “Edit“. You can set your custom number tag here as long as some other user does not take it.
Discord’s interface
Here are some things you can customize with Discord UI. To view them, go to Application Settings, and click on Appearance.
From there, you can choose between two themes: light and dark. You can also change the way messages are displayed. Cozy makes messages appear, spreading further; on the other hand, compacts put all texts closer to each other, hiding the avatars.

General notification settings
By default, notifications are received on all your servers when you are on mobile. On the other hand, desktop notifications are disabled.
Under App Settings> Notifications, you can enable desktop notifications while you are on your computer and disable mobile notifications. You have the option to turn off Discard’s sound effects, such as new messages, new members of voice chat, and more.
Server notification settings
Each server has its notification settings. Go to the server to modify the notification settings and click on the arrow next to the server name. From here, go to Notification Settings.
There are three options for notification settings:
All messages: You will receive a notification whenever a new message is sent to the server. It is ideal for small private servers with fewer members. This option is not available for broad public servers with thousands of members.
Only @mentions: You will receive a notification whenever a person sends a message mentioning your user name
Note: You will not receive notifications from this server.
You can temporarily mute any server by clicking the “Mute” button.
Additionally, you can set notifications for each channel on the same server. Right-click on the server and click “Notification Settings“. If you have a specific channel you want to track, select “All Messages“.
